For the ninth year in a row, Communications Concepts has honored PhotoMedia with its APEX Grand Award, this time in the Best Writing (For-Profit, Small Office) category.

The 2011 APEX Grand Award was for Roger Ressmeyer’s profile of PhotoMedia’s 2010 Photography Person of the Year, ”Louie Psihoyos: Weapon of Mass Construction,” in our Fall 2010 issue.

“In this outstanding magazine for photography pros, the visuals are superb, but the feature articles are equally top-drawer,” said the Apex Grand Award judges. “The Psihoyos interview is a case in point. It’s a fascinating human interest piece that draws you in and keeps you reading to the end — a warm, compelling story, punctuated, of course, with some wonderful photos by the interviewee.”

In addition to the Grand Award, the entire Fall 2010 issue, which featured studio photography as a theme, received an APEX Award of Excellence in the Magazines & Journals — Print Over 32 Pages category.

This was the 23rd annual APEX Awards competition, honoring publishing excellence nationally. All together, PhotoMedia has now received a total of 10 APEX Grand Awards and 13 APEX Awards of Excellence over the last 12 years, and has earned one, the other or both every year. Only 100 Grand Award winners were chosen from more than 3,300 entries. Previous Grand Award wins were for Best Magazine or Journal, Best Magapaper or Newspaper, and Best Photography.

PhotoMedia has also won 7 Maggie Awards — another highly prestigious publishing excellence honor — in 27 nominations over the last 12 years. Ressmeyer's feature on Psihoyos earned a Maggie nomination earlier this year.
