A few months after the New York Times announced major staff reductions in its news gathering operations, The Chicago Sun-Times newspaper laid off its entire photography staff this week, including one Pulitzer Prize winner.

The Chicago paper said it will replace its former photo services with freelance photographers and reporters, as well as amateur photographers to shoot photos and video clips.

The Newspaper Guild said the decision affected 28 full-time staff photographers on the Sun-Times and some sister suburban publications, who all received the news on May 30. The layoffs are effective immediately.
