Family life: Everton enjoys working with his wife, Mary Heebner, an abstract painter and writer. The couple collaborated on "The Western Horizon" in 2000 and "The Book of Santa Barbara" in 2010. A documentary film about their artistic partnership called "Full Circle," by director Russ Spencer, premiered in 2000.

Notable accolades: Wilderness Photography, Best in Category — Amazon and Urban Landscapes (2007) and Urban Landscapes and Human Condition (2006) at PDN World in Focus contest; Professional Travel & Tourism Photographer of the Year from the International Photography Awards (2006); winner, Bettmann 100 photo contest, (2003); winner, Applied Arts Photo & Illustration contest (2001).

Clients: Contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler and Islands magazines. His many editorial clients include Condé Nast Traveler, Gourmet, Life, Los Angeles Times Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Outside, Smithsonian and Town & Country.

Advice for aspiring travel photographers: "If you're going to be a painter, you have to paint. If you're going to be a photographer, you have to shoot. … Pay attention to where you are. … Be in the moment."
