NEX-5N: Sony’s Skinniest, Fastest Interchangeable-Lens Camera

Sony NEX-5N Sony NEX-5N

Slimmed down to just 23.3 millimeters at its thinnest point, Sony’s α NEX-5N interchangeable-lens camera (ILC) may look odd with a giant lens strapped on its front, but it’s not meager in its speed or power.

Housed in a rugged, light magnesium alloy body, the 5N has an intuitive touch-screen interface and a shutter release time lag of approximately 20 milliseconds, the quickest ILC camera to date.

The camera’s Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor has 16.1-megapixel resolution and super-high ISO 25600 sensitivity.

The NEX-5N camera shoots smooth AVCHD Progressive (Ver2.0) full HD movies with high-quality stereo sound at 60p. As with high-end SLR cameras, users can fully control exposure with program, aperture/shutter priority and all-manual modes.

A new perk added to the E-mount line of Sony cameras is the intuitive photo creativity touch interface, which allows for background defocus, exposure, picture effect and other adjustments previewing.

In Speed Priority Continuous mode, the NEX-5N captures fast-moving action at up to 10 frames per second.

The camera’s 3-inch Xtra Fine LCD display can angle up to 80 degrees up or 45 degrees down for easy viewing in any shooting position.

The NEX-5N ultra-compact interchangeable lens digital camera will be available this September in black and silver with an 18-55mm kit zoom lens (model SEL1855) for $700 and as a body-only for $600.

Later this fall, Sony will release three new E-mount lenses: a telephoto zoom E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS (SEL55210), available this October for $350; as well as a Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E 24mm f/1.8 ZA (SEL24F18Z) and an E 50mm f/1.8 OSS (SEL50F18), each available this December for $1,000 and $300, respectively.
