Sony has four new additions to its consumer line of high-definition Handycam camcorders. The new HDR-UX7, HDR-UX5 AVCHD DVD, HDR-HC7 and HDR-HC5 HDV camcorders all feature Sony's ClearVid CMOS sensor technology. All four can process data-rich, high-definition video and come equipped with Sony's Enhanced Imaging Processor circuitry for smooth slow-record and dual-record modes.

The HDR-UX7 and HDR-HC7 models come equipped with a 3-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensor that provides 1080i HD video quality and can produce 6-mega-pixel digital still photos. The two models have hybrid benefits, including Super SteadyShot optical image stabilization to eliminate blur in both digital stills and video. In dual-record mode, these camcorders can shoot video while capturing a 4.6-megapixel still picture.

The HDR-UX5 and HDR-HC5 models both have 2-megapixel ClearVid CMOS sensors that produce 4-megapixel digital still photos in high definition. These models can produce a 2.3-megapixel photo in dual-record mode.

All four models include "x.v. Color" technology, supporting a much wider range of colors compared to the conventional sRGB standard. They also exhibit low-light performance with a new auto slow shutter feature, reducing the shutter speed to a minimum of 1/30 second in order to capture brighter images. The high-resolution screens use SwivelScreen LCDs and additional technology for improved contrast and accurate color reproduction.

The HDR-UX7 and HDR-UX5 can record directly to blank 3-inch DVDs for playback, sharing and archiving. The HD content on DVDs can then be played back on select Blu-ray Disc devices. They also have built-in Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound recording for integration into home theaters. The HDR-HC7 and the HDR-HC5 come with easy-to-understand guides that give brief, on-screen explanations of selectable menu options.

The HDR-HC7 and HDR-HC5 camcorders are available for $1,400 and $1,100, while the HDR-UX7 and HDR-UX5 sell for $1,300 and $1,000, respectively. Additional accessories are optional.
