Environmental photography goes mainstream, as conservation groups increasingly use imagery as a tool to convey the plight of the world's few remaining wild lands.

Perhaps one of the most dedicated photographers ever, William Henry Jackson was not one to travel lightly. During his surveying journeys of the American West in the 1860s, he needed a horse and pack mule to lug his primitive 8x10-inch field camera, several large glass photographic plates and a canvas-tent darkroom. The efforts of Jackson (and his mule) were not in vain, however: the photographs he sent back to Washington, D.C., helped persuade Congress to create Yellowstone National Park, laying the groundwork for a land preservation system that has spread around the world...

This issue marks the start of our 19th year of publishing PhotoMedia. All things considered, it’s something of a miracle that we’ve managed to persevere all these years.

Throughout that time the photography industry has changed dramatically, with an almost complete transition from a traditional to a digital workflow. In the world at large, terrorism, wars, natural disasters and economic struggles – including, most recently, rapidly escalating gas prices — challenge the survival of all businesses.

Especially over the last five years or so, it seems that most people are busier and working harder than ever before just to maintain their lifestyles, while the cost of living spirals upward...

Tamron Upgrades Three Digitally Integrated Lenses

Tamron has introduced three lightweight, compact lenses featuring optical systems designed to meet the performance characteristics of digital SLR cameras as well as film cameras. All three lenses contain multi-coating to reduce ghosting and flare.

The AF28-200mm f/3.8-5.6 XR Aspherical [IF] Macro (Model A031), a high-power zoom lens designed for both digital and film cameras. A 7x magnification power is now available when used with digital SLR cameras. The lens has a telephoto zoom range up to a 310mm equivalent on an interchangeable lens-type digital SLR camera, as well as 28mm wide-angle image capability on a conventional 35mm film SLR camera.
