Fujifilm's HS20 Masters Low Light with Backside Illumination Sensor

Fujifilm HS20 EXR Fujifilm HS20 EXR

Replacing the 10-megapixel FinePix HS10, Fujifilm has added the HS20 EXR to the large array of compact cameras with pro-level features available on the market today. The most notable feature of this particular camera is its 16-megapixel backside illumination EXR CMOS sensor.

The design of conventional CMOS sensors is such that the light has to pass through a layer of wiring before hitting the photo sensor diodes. By moving the front wiring behind the diodes, Fujifilm has been able to improve light sensitivity. This new sensor also has a triple-layer EXR processor. Both of these improvements allow for better low-light images.

Other pro-like features include RAW or JPG recording options and a 1600-percent wide dynamic range.

The HS20 also has a 30x zoom lens, 1080p video recording quality, and high-speed continuous shooting capabilities (8fps burst at full resolution and 11fps burst at 8 megapixels). Autofocusing (specified at .16 second) is also faster in this camera model.

The FujiFilm Finepix HS20 EXR retails for $499.
