IPC Names Professional Photographer Leadership Award Winners

The International Photographic Council has announced the recipients of its eighth annual IPC Professional Photographer Leadership Awards.

Winners were selected by each of six professional photography organizations from among their members: Advertising Photographers of America, Barbara Bordnick; American Society of Media Photographers, George Long; Professional Photographers of America, Jo Alice and Tom McDonald; Professional School Photographers Association International, Anthony J. Cilento Jr.; White House News Photographers Association, Mannie Garcia; and Wedding Portrait Photographers International, Rick and Deborah Ferro.

Frans Lanting Receives Lennart Nilsson Award for Medical and Scientific Photography

Frans Lanting has received the 2005 Lennart Nilsson Award, which recognizes pioneers in medical and scientific photography. Lanting, who is based in Santa Cruz, Calif., was honored for his nature photography, examples of which have appeared in books, magazines and exhibitions around the world. He is a frequent contributor to National Geographic, where he served as photographer-in-residence, and has received numerous awards for his work as a photographer and conservationist.

Graham Nash and Mac Holbert Receive PMDA Visionary Award; Rudy Maschke and Ed Wagner Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Earlier this year, Graham Nash and his business partner, printmaker Mac Holbert, were the recipients of the PhotoImaging Manufacturers & Distributors Association Visionary Award. Co-founded in 1989 by Holbert and Nash, Nash Editions is widely regarded as having started a photographic revolution with its invention of digital fine-art printing.

Blaine Harrington Named American Travel Writers' Travel Photographer of the Year for Second Consecutive Year

Jim Fisc Named IPA International Photographer of the Year; Timothy Griffith and George Lepp also Honored

The International Photography Awards for 2005 have been announced. Jim Fisc, of Atlanta, was named the International Photographer of the Year and the winner of the $10,000 prize.

The award for Professional Photographer of the Year in Architecture was bestowed upon Timothy Griffith, based in San Francisco, who also received the first- and second-place awards in the Buildings category.

Herbert Keppler Receives IPC's Hall of Fame Award

At the International Photographic Council's New Year's luncheon, held at the United Nations, Herbert Keppler received the council's Hall of Fame Award. Keppler, vice president of Popular Photography & Imaging and American Photo magazines, was honored for his efforts to support the advancement of photography.

Anita Duncan Named ASPP's Picture Professional of the Year

Anita Duncan has been honored by the American Society of Picture Professionals as the group's third annual Picture Professional of the Year. Duncan, whose career has encompassed publishing and book design, including a stint as production manager at Marvel Comics, now works at Photo Researchers. Currently she is working on a picture book about the Murray Hill neighborhood in New York City.

Patricio Robles Gil has been named 2006 Outstanding Photographer of the Year by the North American Nature Photography Association. Gil is known for his passion for conservation and the use of photography in protection efforts in his home country of Mexico. The award will be presented at NANPA's 12th Annual Summit, to be held Feb. 9-12, 2006, in Denver.

Karen Huntt and Michele Westmorland Receive Awards for Mytinger Project Documentary

Karen Huntt and Michele Westmorland, of the Mytinger Project, have received Scott Pearlman Field Awards for Science and Exploration from the Explorers Club. Pearlman awards are given to professionals in media and the arts to support documentation of exploration and field research.
