Nikon has introduced its new flagship Speedlight flash, the versatile SB-900, which is capable of a wide zoom range, increased versatility and a faster recycling time.

The flash offers zoom-range coverage from 17 to 200mm, while automatically adapting itself to Nikon's FX- or DX-format cameras. Additionally, light output has been increased to a guide number of 48/157.5 (ISO 200).

Photographers can also select from three light patterns: Standard, Center-weighted to provide the highest guide number and Even, which delivers the most consistent edge-to-edge coverage.

The SB-900 features a Xenon flash tube and reflector system that moves independently to allow for wider zoom range. The flash also offers a quick recycle time of 2.3 seconds while using four rechargeable NiMH batteries.

Controls for setting the wireless master and remote are located on the outside of the unit for easy access. Frequently used functions are easily adjusted with a Rotary Select Dial. The flash also features an easy-to-read LCD screen and assignable hot keys for quicker access to commonly used functions. A thermal cut-out protection system monitors conditions when the flash might overheat due to excessive rapid bursts.

Additionally, the SB-900 can automatically detect certain filters and adjust for white balance, as well as aid autofocus with a broader AF assist beam that covers 20-105mm. The bounce and swivel capability of the flash tilts up to 90° and down -11°, and can swivel 180° left or right.

The Nikon SB-900 Speedlight sells for about $499.
